Illegal logging is threatening one of the world’s great wildernesses – it is the single biggest threat to the future of the Carpathian ecosystem.
Stealing The Last Forest
The forests across the Carpathian Mountains form some of the largest contiguous woodland in Europe. However, since 2005, formerly nationalised forests have been restituted to private landowners in Romania. This process triggered massive clear felling on the restituted land, and many thousands of hectares of forests were illegally logged.
The EIA has recently released a damning report on the crisis.
