Romania

The Carpathians

FAGARAS MOUNTAINS

Holding over half of Europe’s virgin forest, including most of what remains of the continent’s terrestrial megafauna, Romania now sits at the heart of European conservation.

The Carpathian Mountains dominate the central region of Romania. They extend over seven countries and are Europe’s second largest mountain range – covering an area the size of Britain.

Tragically, illegal logging and deforestation threaten this rich ecosystem, which is home to iconic large carnivores such as the brown bear, wolf and lynx.

TENT supports the work of Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC) who are striving to create Europe’s largest forested protected area, over 200,000 hectares, and create the ‘Yellowstone of Europe’.

TENT also founded, and now supports, Regatul Salbatic – an environmental education initiative for children.
