Discover Europe’s Greatest Wildlife Recovery
Join The European Nature Trust and conservation partner CBD-Habitat for an immersive journey into the heart of southern Spain. Here in the stunning ‘dehesa’ landscapes, one of Europe’s greatest conservation success stories continues to unfold – the remarkable return of the Iberian lynx, from the very brink of extinction.
Travel through the wild landscapes of Extremadura and Andalusia, meet the conservationists helping to secure the future of the Iberian lynx, and witness first-hand how dedicated conservation action has brought the Iberian lynx back.
Why Choose the Iberian Lynx Adventure?
The Iberian lynx was once the world’s most endangered cat species. By 2002, fewer than 100 individuals remained in the wild, with just two isolated populations surviving in southern Spain. However, today, thanks to one of Europe’s most ambitious conservation programmes, the Iberian lynx is recovering.
This Coexistence Adventure offers a rare opportunity to witness that recovery first-hand. Over six unforgettable days, you’ll explore some of Spain’s most important lynx landscapes alongside the ecologists, guides, and conservationists working to secure the species’ future. You’ll constantly be surrounded by stunning panoramic vistas, delighting in local Spanish culture and cuisine. You’ll also learn how habitat restoration, monitoring programmes, and community partnerships have transformed the outlook for the Iberian lynx. All the while, you’ll have exceptional opportunities to observe wildlife in some of southern Europe’s richest ecosystems.
Most importantly, your participation directly contributes to ongoing conservation work on the ground, led by conservation partner CBD-Habitat.

Your Conservation Impact
A Conservation Success Story Still Being Written
Few species better illustrate the impact of long-term conservation efforts than the Iberian lynx. Once widespread across the Iberian Peninsula, the species experienced severe declines during the twentieth century due to habitat loss, disease-driven crashes in rabbit populations, and human pressures.
Consequently, by the early 2000s, the population had fallen to fewer than 100 individuals. But today, through coordinated action between conservation organisations, governments, scientists, and local communities, the population has recovered to over 2,500 individuals across Spain and Portugal. With now more than 700 kittens born in the wild annually, April is one of the best time to see Iberian lynx raising their young.
Immerse yourself in the ‘Spanish Serengeti’
The landscapes visited throughout this adventure form part of this continuing recovery story. Alongside lynx, these habitats support a rich diversity of wildlife, including Spanish imperial eagles, golden eagles, griffon vultures, otters, deer, and many other species that rely on healthy Mediterranean ecosystems.
As a result, this experience offers the opportunity not only to observe wildlife, but to understand the conservation efforts helping to shape Europe’s natural future.
How This Adventure Supports Conservation
Included within the cost of your adventure is a direct contribution to CBD-Habitat’s ongoing conservation work.
The recovery of the Iberian lynx is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most significant conservation successes. Yet, this recovery remains ongoing and requires continued support. CBD-Habitat’s Field Technicians and Ecologists work tirelessly on a range of programmes to bolster the recovering lynx population, and increase its range to more of the species’ former habitat across Spain and Portugal.
While populations have increased substantially over the past two decades, conservationists still face challenges. These include habitat fragmentation, climate change, and fluctuations in rabbit populations. As a result, there is a need to reconnect fragmented lynx populations across Spain and Portugal.

Meet The Conservation Partners & Guides
Our Conservation Partner
CBD-Habitat has been at the forefront of lynx recovery for decades. Their team played a key role in the original EU LIFE projects that helped rescue the species from extinction through strategic ‘captive breed-for-release’ programmes, which helped to recover a network of Iberian lynx populations across Spain. And today, a key challenge is improving the connectivity of these populations – the focus of the EU’s recent LIFELynxConnect programme, with CBD-Habitat as a key partner.
From wild release programmes to conflict mitigation, CBD-Habitat is at the forefront of restoring functional, connected populations of wild Iberian lynx across their historic range. Their work includes population monitoring, habitat improvement, and ecological restoration. Together, these efforts help rebuild resilient ecosystems that can adapt to environmental change.
Guided By Experts
Throughout the adventure, you’ll be accompanied by ecologists, wildlife guides and conservation professionals from CBD-Habitat with extensive knowledge of the region and its wildlife. Their expertise provides unique access to conservation projects, wildlife habitats and stories rarely experienced through conventional wildlife tourism.

Your Journey Through Spain
Day 1 – 3 | Madrid to Montes de Toledo
Your adventure begins as we travel to the landscapes of the Montes de Toledo, where you’ll arrive at your first accommodation, the private estate El Castañar.
Over the next few days, you’ll take part in guided wildlife watching experiences across the estate, with opportunities to search for Iberian lynx, eagles, otters, and more native species. And along the way, experts from CBD-Hábitat will share insights into the lynx reintroduction programme. These include the use of radio tracking and camera trapping, as well as the long-term conservation work that has shaped the region since 2014. You’ll also visit the original pre-release enclosure where lynx were first reintroduced into the Montes de Toledo.
What’s more, you’ll enjoy relaxed meals at the estate, sunset outings with a glass of wine, and optional dusk excursions for a chance to spot lynx at their most active. And on day 3, you’ll travel onwards to the historic town of Almagro, where you can unwind, explore its picturesque streets, and settle into your next accommodation.
Day 4 – 5 | Almagro to Extremadura
From Almagro, the journey continues to Sierra de Andújar and the renowned La Olivilla Iberian lynx breeding centre. Here, you’ll learn how lynx are prepared for release into the wild, gaining insight into one of Europe’s most successful conservation stories. You’ll also visit a traditional olive oil mill, offering a closer look at one of the region’s most iconic local products.
From here, you’ll travel into Extremadura, where you’ll spend the next two days exploring private estates dedicated to conservation and rewilding. Wildlife observation then continues to be central to the experience, with further opportunities to encounter Iberian lynx and other species in their natural habitat.
Crucially, there’s also time to relax and recharge. You’ll therefore be able to enjoy the hotel’s facilities, including the pool or spa, as well as slower moments taking in the surrounding landscapes. Evenings bring a strong cultural element, from tasting local produce to experiencing a live flamenco guitar performance, grounding the journey in the traditions of the region.
Day 6 | Matachel Valley and Return Home
On the final day, you’ll head out for one last wildlife viewing experience in the Matachel Valley, with another chance to spot the Iberian lynx. After lunch, you’ll depart for Seville, where your journey comes to a close with your return flight home. However, if you’d like to extend your stay, there’s also the option to spend additional time exploring the vibrant Andalusian capital.
