Dappled green light filtered through the room and bright flowers flowed from the tables.
With beautiful banners of Romania’s elusive carnivores and images of stunning landscapes lining the walls, the guests arriving at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly were welcomed to a fresh green oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of England’s capital.
As drinks and delicious canapés were circulated by the brilliant BAFTA team, guests mingled and enjoyed a glass of fabulous Nyetimber. Soon the reception was filled with a gentle buzz and as the minutes passed, anticipation grew for the imminent screening of the UK Premiere of Untamed Romania.
The clock struck 19.00PM and guests were ushered upstairs to BAFTA’s private cinema – the Princess Anne Theatre. Seating themselves, they were thrilled to find Aqua Carpatica’s refreshments awaiting them alongside further nibbles from Indie Bay Snacks. The evening’s host, Ross Westgate, rose to provide a warming introduction to both The European Nature Trust and Foundation Conservation Carpathia’s admirable work as well as what could be expected from the screening itself. It was a humbling reminder of the injury being done to our remaining wildernesses and a positive redirection to the phenomenal efforts that are, and still can be, taken to reverse this damage. With generous applause, the audience confirmed their assent for Ross’ words and welcomed the Ambassador for Romania, His Excellency Dan Mihalache, to the stage for a few beautiful words on Romania and his appreciation for the work being done there.
The lights dimmed, the curtains opened and Untamed Romania began.
Lynx, bear and wolves were just some of the majestic animals to grace the screen with their presence whilst the rolling Romanian countryside, deep forested hillsides and vast mountain ranges showcased Romania’s raw and wild power. We were left with an impression of vast open spaces, air so clear it burst through your lungs and soft, shadowy haunts that were home to secretive lives and untold tales.
We sometimes forget that such places still exist – especially in Europe. We sometimes overlook that they are under daily threat. As the guests left the premiere, they were under no allusion that decisive action must be taken to protect these vulnerable havens and the abundant life within.
Our evening continued with a delicious three course meal and inspiring speech from Christoph Promberger, Executive Director of Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC). FCC’s principle aim of creating the largest forest national park in Europe, the ‘Yellowstone of Europe’ is ambitious and of a scale that could create a wilderness area of economic and ecological benefit to not just Romania, but the whole of Europe. TENT are proud to have supported such a worthwhile initiative for over 10 years.
Throughout the dinner, guests battled with one another in a silent auction, spurred on by the evening’s host, Paul Lister, who spoke to once again remind the room of the powerful impact their efforts could have on such a deserving cause. As the evening drew to a close, many happy contenders departed having won wonderful prizes and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, some of which included a behind-the-scenes exclusive tour of the Rolls Royce factory; a chance to visit Romania hosted by FCC themselves; and tickets to the hallowed greens of Wimbledon – to name but a few..! Informed, inspired and certainly well-fed, our guests bade one another farewell and began to depart.
We would once again like to thank all those who joined us for your kind support and encouragement. It is always moving to meet with others who are motivated to protect our wild places, its inhabitants and resources, and we were thrilled to have so many with us at BAFTA. Thank you also to H.E. Dan Mihalache for your kind words, Christoph and Barbara Promberger for their unrelenting work, Ross Westgate for your superb hosting yet again and our fantastic sponsors, Auchan Romania, Natura Siberica, Aqua Carpatica and Valiance, for making the evening possible.
It was a truly spectacular evening and one we hope you all thoroughly enjoyed.
