A passion for conservation

BFREE focuses on three key priorities: education, research and conservation. The NGO is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the Maya Mountains Massif which includes the Bladen Nature Reserve, as well as numerous other protected areas comprising close to 1.5 million acres of lowland tropical forest through environmental education, outreach, training, and research. BFREE’s own 1,150 acres of privately protected land in the south of Belize serves as a site for research to enhance our understanding of the natural environment and contemporary threats to subtropical biodiversity. Operating a range of conservation programmes including forest protection and the restoration of the native, critically endangered hicatee turtle population endemic to the region, BFREE is an exciting, grassroots NGO with big vision. Pioneering heirloom cacao agroforestry, the NGO aims to create long-term solutions for forest protection that meaningfully contribute to the regional economy. TENT is working with BFREE on landscape-scale conservation efforts; as one of the only rainforest field stations in this biologically significant region, BFREE enhances learning opportunities and environmental efforts to preserve the last unspoiled wilderness areas of its kind, the Maya Mountains.
