Spain

The Cantabrians

MOUNTAINS OF ASTURIAS

Stretching over 300 kilometres across northern Spain, the Pyrenees and along the coast of the Cantabrian Sea, the Cantabrian Mountains are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the Cantabrian and Pyrenian brown bear.

Habitat loss and mortality due to human activities almost resulted in the eradication of the Cantabrian and Pyrenian brown bear in Northern Spain.

Since 1992, Fundación Oso Pardo (FOP) has been committed to the protection of the rich and diverse wildlife of the Cantabrian Mountains, including the brown bear and its habitat, since it was considered a priority species under the strict protection of the European Community Habitat Directive.

TENT is proud to support the work of FOP, which involves the conservation and restoration of high-interest habitats, bear population monitoring, anti-poaching, environmental training and education, and essential outreach regarding human and animal conflicts.
